Upgrades!
You can upgrade a shield with a smithing table, by spending 2 upgrade materials. This adds a layer of that material, making your shield stronger!

Cheaper Shields
Normal shields no longer need Iron, so you can get one immediately. They are, however, very weak and don't block much damage

Repairing
When two are combined, it results in a fully repaired normal shield. Banner patterns unfortunately can only be applied to regular shields
